RESOURCES & OPERATIONS COMPETENCY

Analysis & Reflection:

"Efficiency is doing things right; effectiveness is doing the right things."

—Peter Drucker

Because I am in the classroom full-time, this is an area that I feel I need more work with to be an effective leader. I feel this is an area that many people lack expertise until they are fully immersed in the job. Although I have not had many opportunities of involvement, I have had some key experiences that have aided in my understanding of the importance of allocating resources and managing operations for the goal of improving student learning.

I have learned that things are not always as they seem. From the outside, as a teacher we often judge administrators for the decisions they make. We may assume the worst. However, I realize that it is impossible to make everyone happy and it is impossible to accomplish everything you wish to acoomplish, especially with limited resources. As a result, it becomes crucial to have a vision and an action plan for how to accomplish this vision. It becomes important to establish priorities based on data. One must take an initaitive to seek out as many outside resources as possible to make the vision a reality.

From my personal experience with resources and operations, laying out a plan has been the key to success. There must be systems in place whether that is a Google Calendar laying out common planning or a committee planning a summer bridge program in order to ensure tasks are completed. It is important to be very knowledgeable about the fiscal budget and how you can manipulate the budget to your advantage. More so, human capital becomes key to accomplishing things. It is impossible to do things alone so purposefully delegating tasks to people with specific strengths helps projects to completion, even with a minimal budget. I have managed to accomplish several key projects without needing a lot of money. I think systems and structures go along way to improve student learning so there is both efficiency and effectiveness.

Elements of Resources & Operations Competency

A school leader manages resources and operations to improve student learning.  This management of resources and operations is demonstrated in the following elements:

01

Develops and implements systems and processes to ensure effective operations that support student learning.

Artifacts

Over Summer 2014, alongside the principal, we created a Professional Development calendar that outlines particular structures in place that would aid in student learning including departmental lesson study cycles, grade team instructional rounds, and interim assessment weeks. These aspects all connect with each other and focus on data, leading to us better supporting student learning.

02

Manages time in relation to student learning priorities. Brings projects to completion.

With the assistance of a collection of staff members (Parent Coordinator, Family Worker, Librarian, Global Kids staff, Math Teacher, Director of Operations, Guidance Counselor, and Administration), I revamped our summer bridge program. Although it was a two week program in the summer, planning started months in advance as it involved effective communication to our families at various points while we continuously discussed an action plan to increase attendance of the summer bridge program. The key was establishing deadlines and clear checkpoints while delegating tasks.

SUMMER BRIDGE 2014

Notable Accomplishment

  • Highest attendance of parents at a school-wide event since 2009.

  • Increased attendance of summer bridge program from 3 to 19.

03

Although I do not have direct experience with managing the budget and resources, this project helped me learn the nuts and bolts of how a school budget works, how to allocate money and other resources effectively in order to support a goal, which in this case was bringing more art programs to my current school.

Aligns youth development and support serves around academic goals.

CAREER DAY 2014

Notable Accomplishment

Helped transform event from 5-person panel to 14-person panel & 50-person networking event

As a way of helping students become college and career ready, we host a career day. Last year in March 2014 was the first time I was actively involved in planning the career day (as I served as a panelist before). With the help of another teacher and my principal, we managed to expand the event to have more panelists present from various sectors and have a networking event so student learn how to dress for success and properly speak to professionals.
